CETEM
is an eminently technologic national institute, thematically
focussed on research and development in mineral and environmental
technologies.
In those areas, it renders technological services to the development
of mineral and metallurgical processes and to the analysis and
technological characterization of minerals or products. It realises,
also, studies and consultations in diverse similar areas such
as mineral economics, information and technical documentation.
Research
and Development activities and Services rendered, include:
technological
characterisation of ores, concentrates and mineral raw materials;
gemmology
and certification of gems and precious stones;
Process mineralogy;
characterisation of industrial residues;
inorganic
chemical analysis; environmental chemical analysis;
briquette,
crushing, grinding, screening tests and classification;
tests on
mineral processing; leaching tests of ore and concentrate;
development
and improvements on mineral processing and extractive metallurgy;
studies of
processing circuits;
pilot-plant
studies for determining the engineering and process parameters;
metal recovery
and recycling of materials;
sustainable
process management;
engineering
of sustainable processes;
treatment
of residues and industrial effluents;
recovery
of areas degraded by mining;
recovery
of polluted areas; and
production
technology and application of industrial minerals, decorative
rocks and aggregates for civil construction.
As an information and consultancy centre, besides relying on
the main reference national library on mineral technology, CETEM
works in the following areas:
it provides
support and technological information for the small and averaged
sized mining companies;
technical
auditing;
environmental
auditing;
environmental
impact diagnosis;
economic
analyses of sectors;
mineral and
environmental law;
mineral economics;
technical
standards;
mercury and
its emission;
engineering
concepts; and
technical
and economical viability studies of new processes or process
modification.
In the formation of human resources, CETEM acts not only on
preparing scholarship holders for the mineral and metallurgical
and chemical sectors, but cosupervises Masters and PhD. students
in partnership with Brazilian and foreign universities.
Besides this, the Centre, in partnership with the Geology Department
of UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), will co-ordinate,
in 2003, a course on gemmology and a MBA (Master of Business
Administration) specialisation course, in the area of decorative
stones in partnership with The Centre of Technology of Marbles
and Granites, CETEMAG, of Espírito Santo.
