The
most critical point of mercury pollution is that the metal is
not biodegradable. Even after interrupting its use, it remains
as a threat to human health due to the transformation processes
occurring in the environment. The problem mainly affects river-dwelling
populations, who basically eat fish as their principal source
of protein.
The following is a schematic illustration of the physical, chemical,
and biochemical processes that occur with mercury after it is
released into the environment.
