CETEM, Centre for Mineral Technology, has been working on the research and development of technologies for the sustainable use of Brazilian mineral resources since April 1978, always facing new challenges in these first 42 years.
CETEM is the the only public research institute in Brazil leading researches focused on mineral technology and sustainability in the mining field. It was conceived in the early 1970s, initially linked to Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), to support the implementation of specific policies, aimed at replacing imports of mineral goods and developing technological solutions for the minerals from companies operating in the country.
In 1989, CETEM became part of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations (MCTI) through the enactment of the Law no. 7,677/1988.
More recently the Law no. 13,540 of December of 2017 marks the beginning of a new stage in the history of CETEM. According to the Law the Centre should receive 1.8% of the royalties from the mining sector "for research, studies and projects of treatment, processing and industrialization of mineral goods", circa US $ 20 million per year. The scope of CETEM's contribution to development and innovation of science and technology in Brazilian mineral industry will broaden significativelly in the next years.
We took the opportunity to present a version of the site in English language, in order to extend access to information about CETEM to a larger audience in an increasingly connected world.
